THE FACE BEHIND THE LIP BALMS
Hi, I'm Denise, founder of SOAP AND OILS BATH CO and UNCHAPPED lip balms. I'm originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina; I've called San Diego home for the past five years and have been a small business owner for the last three.
The idea for SOAP & OILS BATH CO was... well, always in my head but I just didn't know it. I never really enjoyed wearing makeup and to this day I rarely do. I believe that the right products will help your skin look and feel their natural best and that is all we really need. I like simple things so, in my opinion, a soap should clean, a lotion should moisturize and a lip balm should keep your lips "UNCHAPPED". And yes, this is exactly how I came up with the name.
Just a little back story, I promise I won't make it too long. It was July 2020 (I think we can all remember that year very well) and I was recently unemployed. Being a mom to a then 6 month old I couldn't just sit still and wait until the job market got better so, after giving it a lot of thought and multiple conversations with my husband, we decided it was the right time (if that thing even exists) to do something that represents me, and this is how it all started.
I always loved arts and crafts, making stuff from scratch, cooking, etc., you get the point. I had experimented with making soap before and was always interested in expanding my knowledge further into the handmade skincare business; in my opinion it's just better when you know exactly what is in the products you use everyday, specially lip balms because we tend to lick them.
Like any family owned small business the stories of how we got here are endless but I promised I was going to make it short. So, I'll just say, this is how it all began and in July 2021, exactly one year after embarking on the small business journey, we opened our first brick and mortar store SOAP & OILS BATH CO. in Old Town, San Diego, which has been our only point of sale until now.
You are probably wondering how any of this has anything to do with UNCHAPPED lip balms? Well, the first lip balms we made and sold at our store were vegan and amazing but they contained shea butter and almond oil in the ingredients, which is not a problem for a lot of people but those with some food allergies weren't able to use them. I had never thought of that before! I'm lucky enough to be in direct contact with our customers and after I heard the "I can't use this because I'm allergic to..." so many times I decided I needed to make a vegan and allergen free product so that more people could use it.
This is how UNCHAPPED became what it is now. After a year of testing recipe after recipe, and my family, friends and regular customers being my "lovely, always willing to help" testers, we proudly released UNCHAPPED in our store in May 2023. Our customers love these lip balms so much that we decided to start an online shop to be accessible to people all over the country.
